Austrian Audio OC616: the flagship CKR12 capsule in a five-pattern workhorse

Singer recording vocals with the Austrian Audio OC616
TL;DR: The Austrian Audio OC616 takes the handmade CKR12 dual-diaphragm capsule from the flagship OC818, gives it five switchable polar patterns, three high-pass filters and two pads, and voices it for a direct, mix-ready sound. Pre-order price at Soundium: €599 for the Studio Set with shockmount, clip and case. The honest catch: one output, so no PolarDesigner pattern editing after the take like on the OC818.

Introduction

Austrian Audio's large-diaphragm range has always had a gap in the middle. The OC16 is the affordable cardioid, the OC18 is the refined cardioid specialist, and the OC818 is the dual-output flagship with 255 patterns and an app. If you wanted switchable patterns, you went straight to the top.

The OC616 fills that gap. It uses the same CKR12 capsule as the OC818, handmade and individually measured in Vienna, but runs it through a single transformerless output with five fixed patterns on the body: cardioid, hypercardioid, wide cardioid, omni and figure-8. Austrian Audio calls it The Powerhouse of the family.

The bigger change is the voicing. Where the OC818 and OC18 are tuned soft and unobtrusive, the OC616 is tuned to sound more direct and punchy, closer to the OC16's attitude. It's built to sound close to finished on the way in, which is exactly what a home or project studio usually wants.

Watch It in Action

Austrian Audio's official rundown of the OC616:

Key Features & Benefits

  • One mic for every source: five polar patterns cover vocals, amps, rooms, overheads and Mid/Side or Blumlein stereo without swapping hardware.
  • Flagship capsule, mid-range price: the CKR12 1-inch dual-diaphragm ceramic capsule from the OC818, handmade in Vienna.
  • Less EQ later: a clear, direct, punchy voicing that sits in a mix with little processing.
  • Take serious level: 147 dB SPL, 157 dB SPL with the pad, and 134 dB of dynamic range for drums and cranked cabinets.
  • Clean up at the source: high-pass filters at 40, 80 and 160 Hz plus -10 and -20 dB pads.
  • Quiet for vocals: 13 dB(A) self-noise and 13 mV/Pa sensitivity from a transformerless FET circuit.
  • Ready out of the box: the Studio Set ships with the OCS6 shockmount, OCH8 clip and MCS616 foam-lined case.

Real-World Reactions

“Rather than getting the transparency of a modern 414-style mic, the OC616 delivers a more ‘finished,’ production-ready sound, making it ideal for project and home studio use.”
Bonedo (roughly: if you're a semi-pro musician or producer looking for an assertive multi-pattern recording mic, the OC616 might be exactly your thing)

Both early takes land on the same point we do. This isn't a cheaper OC818. It's a different personality: more forward, more committed, and built for people who want one condenser that handles the whole session.

Who It's For

  • Home and project studios that want one condenser for vocals, instruments and drums
  • Producers who track a bit of everything and want patterns for rooms and stereo
  • OC16 owners ready to step up to the CKR12 capsule and switchable patterns

Who should look elsewhere:

  • Engineers who want to change patterns after recording or capture immersive formats. The dual-output OC818 with PolarDesigner is still that tool.
  • Anyone after a soft, neutral, transparent cardioid. The OC18 is tuned for exactly that.

Final Thoughts

The OC616 is the mic Austrian Audio's range was missing: the OC818's capsule and real pattern choice, without paying for dual outputs you may never use. If you want maximum control after the take, the OC818 still wins. If you want one forward-sounding condenser that handles whatever the next session brings at €599, this is the one to watch.
